The Intergenerational School is an Ohio Community school, sometimes called a charter school. It is a public school that is offered as a choice to parents and students. Each school establishes its own mission, philosophy and educational programs.
Mission:
The Intergenerational School fosters an educational community of excellence that provides experiences and skills for lifelong learning and spirited citizenship for learners of all ages.
Vision:
The Intergenerational School will serve as a model to encourage and invigorate communities to create new environments that empower learners of all ages as they become life long contributors to a democratic society.
The Intergenerational School opened September 2000 and is located at The
Fairhill Center, 12200 Fairhill Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44120.
SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA
Admission to The Intergenerational School is open to any student living in the State of Ohio. The Intergenerational School does not select students on any basis other than random lottery, which will be held in the event that the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the school's program, classes, or facilities per ORC 3314.06. There will be no discrimination in the admission of students to TIS on the basis of race, creed, color, handicapping condition, or sex: and that upon admission of any handicapped student, TIS will comply with all federal and state laws regarding the education of handicapped students, per ORC 3314.06. Preference is given to returning students, siblings of enrolled students, and City of Cleveland residents.

LOTTERY PROCEDURES
A lottery will be held in the event the number of applicants exceed the capacity of the school's program and classes. Each completed application will be assigned a number in consecutive order. The same number will be placed on a receipt given to the parent. In the event that more than one child from a single family has applied, one lottery number will be assigned to each child. If that number is offered admission, all siblings will be offered admission, if space is available. On the date of the lottery, an outside auditor will use a random number generator table or computer program to supply a list of the application numbers in random sequence. Admission lottery held in the spring, if needed. Admission slots will be offered first to returning students and siblings. Remaining slots will then be offered according to the random order until classes have been filled, with preference to Cleveland residents. As soon as one level becomes filled, no more students of that level will be offered admission unless they are members of a sibling group. As a non-graded school, there is some flexibility in the number of students in each level that may be admitted, so sibling groups will be admitted if possible. If a full sibling group cannot be admitted, the parent will be given the option of enrolling just those children for whom there are slots. If, after completing the above procedures, there are unfilled slots in a particular age level, additional students will be admitted from the original random order regardless of age until full enrollment is achieved. Due to the non-graded, multi-age developmental nature of the TIS classroom organization, there is some flexibility in the assignment of students to age level groups.
Once students have been admitted according to the above procedures, the remaining applications will be assigned a place on the waiting list in the random order already generated. If an admitted student fails to enroll, that vacated slot will be offered to the next student in the same level on the waiting list. If there are no students of the same level, the slot will be offered to the next student on the waiting list regardless of age.

NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES
Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the lottery but attendance is not mandatory. Parents who do not attend the lottery will be notified of their child's status within five business days of the lottery through phone contact by The Intergenerational School Staff and via return receipt mail sent to the address provided on the application. Parents are required to provide written confirmation (on forms included with the lottery notification) of their intention to enroll their child in the school and of their agreement to notify their school district of residence of their plans. The necessary forms and a stamped addressed envelope will be provided in the notification mailing. Failure to sign and return these forms to The Intergenerational School within five business days after receipt of notification will result in the transfer of that opening to another student. Enrollment and orientation sessions will take place in May. In order to complete enrollment, parent/guardian will complete, with the assistance of school personnel, any additional procedures needed to obtain a transfer of records (including health records required by law) from the student's previous school and to notify the appropriate school district of the child's enrollment in The Intergenerational School. School/preschool observations and educational assessments may also be conducted.
